Underground mine construction Newmont Waihi gold mine at Favona in Waihi New Zealand began in late in 2004 on the decline for the Favona underground operation. While some ore was mined during construction, full ore production from stopes began in 2006. Currently ore from underground and from the  Martha open pit are both fed to the processing plant and treated alternately.

Gold occurs principally as a native metal, usually alloyed to a greater or lesser extent with silver (as electrum), or sometimes with mercury (as an amalgam). Native gold can occur as sizeable nuggets, as fine grains or flakes in alluvial deposits, or as grains or microscopic particles embedded in other rocks.

Gold is found widely diffused in nature even though it is one of the scarcer metals. Very commonly, gold occurs as the native metal encased within quartz. Sometimes the gold is in a finely divided state, sometimes in particles of considerable size, as nuggets, grains, scales, plates, threads and wires in quartz rock.
